The Stag & Hunter…
100 Years of Beers!
A Mayfield local since 1926
For a century The Stag & Hunter has stood proudly on the corner of Maitland Road and Hanbury Street, watching Mayfield change, grow, knock off, go out, wake up, and start again.
Built in 1926, our much-loved old pub has seen generations of locals pass through its doors - steelworkers, shift workers, musicians, families, footy teams, old mates, new mates, and the occasional bloke who only came in for “one quick beer” and stayed for a few.
Before it became The Stag & Hunter, the hotel was known by other names, including the Waratah Hotel and Amos Hotel. The name has changed over the years, but the job has stayed pretty much the same: cold beer, good food, live music, a friendly bar, and a place for Newcastle to gather.
A family pub with a live music heart
The Stag has been run by the Moyle family since 1998, with Kim and Mick Starkey leading the venue into its current era from 2003.
That chapter has helped shape The Stag into the venue people know today: a proper old Mayfield pub that still feels like a pub, with a big commitment to live music, community events, good food and looking after locals.
Along the way, The Stag has backed bands, supported community groups, sponsored sporting teams, hosted fundraisers, fed families, poured knock-off beers and helped keep Newcastle’s live music scene moving - especially through some rough years when venues and artists had to fight hard to survive.
TIMELINE
1900s
The hotel site begins its life as a local pub, known in earlier records as the Waratah Hotel.
1926
The current building takes shape on the corner of Maitland Road and Hanbury Street - the date still proudly marked on the façade today.
1920s–2000s
The hotel operates for many years as Amos Hotel, serving generations of Mayfield locals through the suburb’s industrial heyday and beyond.
1998
Alan and Helen Moyle take on the pub, beginning the Moyle family’s long connection with the hotel.
2003
Kim and Mick Starkey continue the family legacy, helping guide the pub into its modern era as The Stag & Hunter.
Today
The Stag is a proudly Mayfield pub: part live music venue, part local meeting place, part dining room, part front bar, and part living history.
